Playa del Carmen in October and November: Weather, Day of the Dead and Things to Do
Read this post in: English · Español · Français
Ask anyone who lives in Playa del Carmen to name their favorite time of year and you will hear the same answer again and again: right now. October and November sit in that quiet pocket between the summer rush and the winter high season. The sea is warm, the streets are relaxed, and the town slowly dresses up for one of the most beautiful celebrations in Mexico. If you are planning a fall trip to the Riviera Maya, here is what to expect from Playa del Carmen in October and November, and how to make the most of these weeks.
Playa del Carmen weather in October and November

Fall in Playa del Carmen is warm and tropical. Days are made for the beach, and the Caribbean is at its warmest after soaking up the summer sun, so swimming and snorkeling feel wonderful well into the evening. You may see an afternoon shower, since the rainy season winds down gradually through October and November, but rain here usually arrives in short bursts and clears quickly. Plan your beach time for the morning, keep a light rain layer handy, and you will rarely lose a day of your vacation to weather.
Day of the Dead in Playa del Carmen
If your dates include the start of November, you are in for something special. Dia de Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is celebrated across Mexico on November 1 and 2, and the Riviera Maya embraces it fully. Around Playa del Carmen you will find altars, marigolds and candlelit displays in parks, shops and hotel lobbies, and the nearby Xcaret park hosts its well known Festival of Life and Death Traditions around these dates each year. It is a warm, family centered celebration rather than a somber one, and respectful visitors are welcomed into it. Once you are here, ask us where to see the best altars near your vacation rental. We love sharing this one.
Beaches and cenotes near Playa del Carmen, minus the crowds

The shoulder season is when Playa del Carmen feels most like itself. You can spread out on the sand near Coco Beach or in front of Playacar without hunting for space, and the famous cenotes along the highway toward Tulum are far quieter than in winter or summer. Arrive at a cenote when it opens and you may have those impossibly clear, cool freshwater pools nearly to yourself. Bring water shoes, skip the sunscreen before you swim to protect the water, and give yourself a full morning for two or three cenotes in one outing.
A day trip to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen
One of the easiest adventures from any of our rentals is the passenger ferry to Cozumel, which leaves right from the pier at the foot of 5th Avenue in the center of town. The crossing is short and scenic, and ferries run throughout the day, so you can treat it as a casual day trip rather than a production. On the island, rent a scooter or hire a taxi to circle the wild eastern shore, snorkel the famously clear water on the protected west side, and be back in Playa in time for dinner.
Where to eat in Playa del Carmen in the fall

Fall is also a lovely time to eat here. With fewer visitors in town, you can walk into popular spots on 5th Avenue without long waits, and the quieter streets a few blocks inland reward anyone willing to wander. Follow the locals to the taquerias away from the beach for al pastor done properly, try the fresh ceviche and grilled catch near the ferry pier, and save one evening for a slow dinner on a rooftop while the sea breeze does its thing.
