Best Cenotes Near Playa del Carmen: A Local Guide to Swimming, Snorkeling and Day Trips

Ask anyone who lives in Playa del Carmen what a visitor absolutely cannot miss, and cenotes will come up within the first minute. These freshwater pools, hidden in the jungle just off the highway, are the Riviera Maya’s signature natural wonder. The water is cool, remarkably clear and refreshing in a way the ocean never quite matches. The best part for our guests is that some of the most beautiful cenotes in Mexico sit within an easy drive of your vacation rental in Playa del Carmen. Here is where to start.
What is a cenote and why should you visit one?
A cenote is a natural sinkhole formed where the limestone bedrock of the Yucatán Peninsula collapsed, opening a window to the groundwater underneath. The whole region is laced with underground rivers, and cenotes are the places where that hidden world comes to the surface. Some are wide open pools ringed by jungle, some are half covered grottos, and others are full caverns with stalactites hanging over the water. Each one has its own personality, which is exactly why locals never get tired of visiting them.

Cenote Azul, Cristalino and Jardín del Edén: easy swims south of Playa del Carmen
If this is your first cenote, head south on Highway 307 toward Puerto Aventuras. Three local favorites sit close together on this stretch: Cenote Azul, Cenote Cristalino and Jardín del Edén. All three are open air cenotes with wide swimming areas, shallow sections where kids can splash, and rock ledges where braver swimmers jump into the deep blue center. They are easy to reach by rental car, taxi or colectivo, which makes them perfect for a relaxed half day trip from Playa del Carmen. Go early on a weekday and you may have the water nearly to yourselves.
Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote: snorkeling in crystal clear caverns
For something more dramatic, continue down the highway toward Tulum. Dos Ojos, named for the two connected sinkholes that resemble a pair of eyes, is one of the most famous cavern cenotes in the world. Snorkelers float over pale rock formations lit by shafts of sunlight, and certified divers can go much deeper into the cave system with a guide. Nearby Gran Cenote, on the road from Tulum to Cobá, combines open pools with caverns and is a well known spot for seeing freshwater turtles. Bring a snorkel mask, because the visibility has to be seen to be believed.

Casa Cenote: where the jungle meets the Caribbean
Casa Cenote, also known as Cenote Manatí, is unlike anything else on this list. It is a long open channel that winds through the mangroves at Tankah, between Akumal and Tulum, just steps from the sea. The mix of fresh and salt water attracts plenty of fish, and the gentle current makes it a lovely place to snorkel or paddle at an easy pace. Since the beach is right there, it pairs naturally with a lazy afternoon on the sand.

Tips for visiting cenotes near Playa del Carmen
Cenotes connect directly to the aquifer that supplies the region’s drinking water, so a little care goes a long way. Skip sunscreen and bug spray before you swim, since even biodegradable products are restricted at many cenotes, and use the showers at the entrance. Bring water shoes for the rocky edges, a towel, and cash, because many cenotes are family run and do not take cards. Life jackets are available at most sites and are required at some. Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit, and the light inside the caverns is at its best around midday. If you would rather not drive, guided tours and private drivers are easy to arrange, and our team is glad to help you plan the day.
