Cozumel Day Trip from Playa del Carmen: Ferry Tips, Snorkeling and a One Day Itinerary
Read this post in: English · Español · Français
Stand on the beach in Playa del Carmen and Cozumel is right there, a long green stripe on the horizon. The island is one of the easiest day trips you can make from your vacation rental: walk to the pier, hop on the ferry, and in about 45 minutes you are stepping off in San Miguel with a whole day ahead of you. Here is how our guests usually do it, with local tips to keep the crossing smooth and the day unhurried.
How the Playa del Carmen to Cozumel Ferry Works
The passenger ferry leaves from the pier next to Parque Fundadores, at the southern end of Fifth Avenue, so if you are staying downtown you can walk there in minutes. Competing ferry companies run the route, with departures spread across the day from early morning until evening. You can buy tickets at the booths by the pier or online, and a round trip ticket lets you return on any sailing of the same company. Once aboard, grab a seat on the open upper deck if you enjoy the breeze, or sit low and central in the cabin if you are prone to seasickness.

When to Go and the Best Time of Year
For a full day on the island, aim for a morning boat out and a late afternoon boat back. Winter is a lovely season for the trip, since this is the drier part of the year in the Riviera Maya and the water around Cozumel stays warm enough to snorkel comfortably. The channel can get choppy on windy days, so if a norte, one of the winter wind fronts, blows through, take an earlier ferry and keep your plans flexible. Schedules shift with the season, so check the departure board or the ferry company website on the day you travel.
What to Do in Cozumel in One Day
San Miguel, the island’s only town, begins right at the ferry pier. The waterfront promenade, the main square and the surrounding streets are easy to explore on foot, with taquerias and cafes waiting a couple of blocks inland where the locals eat. To see more of the island, taxis wait at the pier, and renting a jeep or scooter lets you do the classic loop: down the sheltered west coast, around the lighthouse at Punta Sur, then up the wild east side, where the beaches face the open sea and are often nearly empty. Leave time for a stop at one of the east coast beach bars before rolling back into town.

Snorkeling, Reefs and Beach Clubs in Cozumel
Cozumel is famous for the reefs along its sheltered west coast, where the water is calm and remarkably clear. For easy snorkeling, settle in at one of the beach clubs south of town, rent gear for the day and swim out from the shore. For the signature spots, such as the Palancar reef area and the El Cielo sandbar known for its sea stars, join a boat tour from the marinas near San Miguel; morning departures usually get the calmest conditions. Certified divers already know the island’s reputation, since the drift diving here draws people from all over the world.

Practical Tips from Your Local Host
Bring pesos in cash for taxis, tips and beach clubs, since cards are not accepted everywhere on the island. Pack light: a small backpack with a towel, hat, water and reef friendly sunscreen covers it. Keep your return ticket handy, note the time of the last ferry back to Playa del Carmen, and aim for the sailing before it so you are never rushed at the pier. Wear comfortable sandals, because the best parts of San Miguel reveal themselves when you wander away from the cruise shops along the waterfront.
